PSALM 1

This page of decorative capitals simply requires a capital B to precede it. Instead, p72 supplies BEATUS VIR, making the top line of p73 redundant. The letters are in the same foliate style as p72 but they appear to be unfinished. Most lack the decorative infilling and only a few are painted. The spacing is poor, particularly lines 6 and 7. The gilding is messy and hastily applied. The last four letters CATH, should be completed by EDRA (cathedra) on p74, but the letter E is left out. The style of these initials, with their foliate nodes and flourishes, is very similar to Leiden, Universiteitsbibliotheek B.P.L.114B, 76r and v (Thomson, 1982, pl. 21,22), a copy of Priscian almost certainly made at St Albans. This type of decorative letter page, with coloured foliate lettering and three-dimensional meander border is also found on the Sacramentary of Henry II, from Bamberg (AP, pl145, Munich Bayerische Staatsbibliothek Clm. 4456)
