THE BETRAYAL
Matthew 26:47-52; Mark 14:43-48
Three episodes are depicted at once. Judas kisses Christ whose right hand
is held up in blessing. The crowd grab and arrest him on the right. On
the left, Peter is cutting off Malchus’ ear with a sword. The background
is filled with crowd and soldiers, so Peter and Judas are the only apostles
present.
Features like the absence of the apostles and Judas approaching from the
right are found in Middle Byzantine and Armenian sources, but also occur
in Italy, for instance the central Italian painted cross of Sarzana (AP,
90, pl 128c and d). Two of the spatulate weapons are like the signum
or Roman standard used in the scene of St Alban’s martyrdom (p416)
